What is Vaginismus?
The vagina is the organ where sexual intercourse takes place in women. This organ is during sexual intercourse and childbirth.
It has the ability to expand and extend.
The answer to the question of what is vaginismus can be defined as the situation in which there are involuntary contractions in the vaginal canal that make sexual intercourse difficult or impossible.
It is one of the most common female psychosexual problems.
Vaginismus patients involuntarily contract all their pelvic muscles, especially the pubococcygeus muscle, and even all the body muscles during sexual intercourse. Muscle pain due to excessive contractions can be seen. Women who are distressed by this situation experience mental pain as well as physical pain during sexual intercourse. This situation causes tension and unhappiness between spouses. Although the most common causes of vaginismus are psychological, organic or physical causes make up 10%.
Organic causes;
- The hymen is thick and fleshy,
- Short and blunt vagina
- Having a curtain on the vaginal wall,
- pelvic infections,
- Bartholin gland abscess,
- Vaginal infections and fungi
It is extremely important for these patients to undergo a gynecological examination and to detect and treat the organic problem.
Psychological reasons:
Vaginismus is a body defense condition that aims to protect the woman herself. The problem is subconscious.

concepts such as the first sexual experience, false information about the first sexual experience, the hymen is a very valuable organ.
Religious and moral reasons are included in this group.
In some cases, vaginismus can be acquired later (Secondary vaginismus).
The most common causes:
Harsh, rude gynecological examinations and procedures, false information about sexual intercourse, lack of information and false beliefs can cause fear and create vaginismus.
Treatment:
The patient is examined gynecologically. If there are organic causes, they can be eliminated with surgery and drug treatments.
